The Northern Lights were at their most magnificent yesterday, fittingly filling the sky with shifting shades of green — along with a rainbow of other colours — on the eve of St. Patrick’s Day.

Based on the photo evidence, Whistler looked to be a good spot to capture the geomagnetic light show known as Aurora borealis, which hit a spectacular peak across the northern hemisphere on Tuesday morning (March 17).

The unusually intense effect is being caused by a severe geomagnetic storm hitting Earth right now, making views of the colourful sky easier to pick up further south from the planet’s Arctic reaches.

If you live in the northern reaches of the planet, or happen to be orbiting on the International Space Station, reports are the Aurora borealis might put on another show Wednesday night.
